WHAT IS GOOD TO OUR HEALTH?

1 A lack of calcium in our diets can lead to osteoporosis, the disease that makes bones weak and
brittle (1) and prone (2) to fractures. It's a crippling (3) disease that affects half of all American
women over the age of 45 It can't be cured but it can be prevented. The prevention is as simple and
easy as pouring a glass of milk or topping our sandwich with cheese or snacking on yogurt. Getting
an adequate amount of calcium in our daily diets is the best safeguard.
2 As we grow older our bodies absorb calcium less efficient- ly. We actually start to lose bone after
we turn 35 and if we don't have a build-up of bone mass from our early years, the bone deterio- ration
(4) will occur more rapidly. Today experts find that less than 16 percent of teenage girls get only half
of the required 1200 mg. of calcium.
3.Milk is rich in nutrients (6). There are about 300 mg. of calcium in one cup of low-fat milk. Milk
also contains many nutri- ents vital to calcium absorption, including vitamin D and high- quality
protein. Some people have gotten away from drinking milk due to the beverage (5) industry's push
for soft drinks. Empty calories are your worst enemy.
4When there is insufficient calcium in our blood stream to
support our life processes, our bodies make a withdrawal (7) from our bones. We need to make a
daily deposit (8) of calcium in our bones by drinking milk and eating dairy (9) foods.
5.It is difficult to predict who will develop osteoporosis, but we do know that by getting our
recommended dietary allowances of calcium every day from milk and dairy foods, we can stack the
odds in our favor (10).
